Executive Director of Teaching & Learning


Chris LavanChristopher Lavan, Ph.D. serves as the Executive Director of Teaching & Learning in Teaching & Learning Innovation (TLI). In his role, Lavan serves as the department head, and is responsible for developing and implementing strategic direction for TLI that focuses on the Chancellor’s, Provost’s, and Vice Provost for Faculty Affair’s priorities for faculty development at the university. He also leads, coordinates, represents the unit, and builds strategic partnerships to support TLI’s services and offerings, including workshops, annual events (TLI’s Innovative Teaching & Learning Conference, Faculty Appreciation Week contribution), and professional development institutes (such as TLI’s Course Redesign Institute and New Faculty Teaching Institute), as well as the development of online resources and asynchronous professional development for instructors and teaching faculty at UT-Knoxville. Additionally, he also led all aspects of the university’s Quality Enhancement Plan (Experience Learning; 2015-2020).

Lavan earned his doctorate in Urban Higher Education from Jackson State University, a master’s degree in public administration from Louisiana State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology (English minor) from Centenary College of Louisiana. Working in higher education since 2006, he has successfully led and supported university-wide initiatives and offices in the areas of experiential learning (volunteerism, service-learning, community engagement, study abroad and international education), diversity and inclusion programming and training, and academic accreditation. He also taught on the college level for 6 years.
