Assistant Provost for Experiential Learning & Teaching Innovation
Christopher Lavan, Ph.D. serves as the Assistant Provost for Experiential Learning & Teaching Innovation. In his role, Lavan is responsible for developing and implementing strategic direction for the department that focuses on the provost’s and chancellor’s priorities for faculty development, and leads all aspects of the university’s Quality Enhancement Plan (Experience Learning). Additionally, he leads, coordinates, and supports workshops and training institutes (such as the Teaching & Learning Innovation Summer Institute and New Faculty Teaching Institute), as well as online resource development for instructors and teaching faculty at UT Knoxville. On a regular basis, Lavan works with members of TLI Leadership Team to further TLI’s mission in driving faculty development forward and strengthening it on our campus.
Lavan earned his doctorate in Urban Higher Education from Jackson State University, and holds a master’s degree in public administration from Louisiana State University. Working in higher education since 2006, he has successfully led and supported university-wide initiatives and offices in areas of volunteerism, service-learning, community engagement, study abroad and international education, diversity and inclusion programming and training, and academic accreditation.
