Inclusion, Belonging, and Well-being

Creating a classroom where every student feels valued, supported, and encouraged to thrive is at the heart of impactful teaching. Our resources on Inclusion, Belonging, and Well-being offer insights, tools, and strategies to help you cultivate an environment where all students feel they belong. From fostering respectful dialogue to supporting mental health and wellness, explore ways to build an inclusive community that champions diversity and uplifts every learner. Here are a few resources TLI has put together:

  • National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity
    • The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is a proud institutional member of NCFDD. NCFDD is a nationally recognized, independent organization that provides online career development and mentoring resources for faculty, staff, graduate students, and post-docs. NCFDD’s programs can help faculty increase writing productivity, establish and maintain work-life balance, and create broad networks of collegial support on campus.
  • Universal Design for Learning
    • Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for proactively creating accessible learning environments and experiences. Through the UDL lens, instructors design multiple, flexible, practical strategies for our variable and diverse students. UDL emphasizes the role of the environment in enabling or disabling learners rather than negatively labeling students themselves.
  • Foster the Volunteer Experience
    • Research shows that intentionally focusing on student well-being in the classroom can enhance student learning and increase their ability to thrive in school. This new webpage provides resources to help faculty integrate pedagogical strategies on student well-being into their courses.
  • Inclusive Teaching
    • Inclusive teaching refers to pedagogy that strives to serve the needs of all students, regardless of background or identity, and support their engagement with subject material.
