Teaching and Learning Innovation is proud to host its third annual Teaching Summit on Tuesday, October 28th, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm in the University of Tennessee Student Union in rooms 362A/B. The summit is designed to provide an opportunity for faculty and staff to come together and ideate on emerging topics related to the teaching culture at UTK. The summit is composed of two parts: plenary sessions and concurrent sessions.
This year, the theme of the plenary sessions will be “Empowering Teaching in Current Times“. We are delighted to have Dr. Liz Barnes, who is an Associate Professor at Middle Tennessee State University in the Department of Biology. Her area of study is how to effectively teach and communicate about controversial topics using principles from the social sciences so that we can mitigate polarization about these topics in society. In addition to Dr. Barnes, we will have an opportunity to hear from university officials regarding current guidelines and considerations related to teaching in our current environment.
Our concurrent sessions will focus on various teaching initiatives currently underway on campus. These include the ongoing efforts to promote the Principles of Excellence in Teaching (PoET) as well as an open discussion with Dr. Barnes that focuses specifically on effective STEM instruction.
Please make plans to join us for this exciting event. Please note that a light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Our co-sponsors include the Faculty Senate, the Division of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, and the Community of Scholars for Advancing Teaching Excellence (CATE).
